Ghepan Lake – A Glimpse of Paradise:

The Lahaul Valley of Himachal Pradesh is home to the high-altitude alpine lake known as Ghepan Lake. This gorgeous lake, which is located at an elevation of almost 14,000 feet above sea level, stays frozen throughout the winter, resulting in a picturesque and serene setting. Ghepan Lake is a true haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts because it is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and verdant meadows.  This is a relatively new and hence unexplored trek so the nature all around is pristine without garbage or crowds.

When to Visit Ghepan Lake:

The best time to embark on the trek to Ghepan Lake is during the summer months, from late June to September. During this period, the weather is relatively mild, and the snow has melted, allowing you to witness the true beauty of the landscape.  To be able to witness the mind blowing autumn colors, as you see in the pictures, it is recommended to visit during late September.

How to Reach Ghepan Lake from Manali:

To reach Ghepan Lake, you can start your journey from Manali, which is well-connected by road and air. From Manali, you’ll travel to Sissu, the first village in Lahaul valley on the other side of the Atal Tunnel.  The trek to Ghepan Lake begins from the village of Sissu village monastery, which is easily accessible from Manali. One can take a bus from Maal road bus stand (frequency is every hour) or hire a taxi.

The Trekking Experience:

The trek to Ghepan Lake is a moderate-to-difficult one, and it’s essential to be prepared both physically and mentally. The trail takes you through lush green meadows and rocky terrain, offering a diverse range of landscapes to explore. You’ll cross pristine streams and encounter the local flora and fauna, making every step of the journey a memorable experience.

It takes 7 hours to reach the lake from Sissu for an average person.  So it is better to make it a one night/two days plan rather than a day trek.

Camping by Ghepan Lake:

One of the highlights of this trek is camping by the crystal-clear waters of Ghepan Lake. Setting up your campsite amidst this untouched wilderness is an awe-inspiring experience. There is a glacier which feeds the lake very near and it is a nice walk to see it.  The night sky here is a canvas of stars, and the tranquility of the surroundings creates a sense of peace that is hard to find elsewhere.

Things to Carry:

To ensure a safe and comfortable trek, it’s crucial to pack appropriately. Here are some essentials to bring:

  • Warm Clothing: Even during the summer months, nights can get cold at high altitudes.
  • Trekking Gear: Including a good pair of hiking boots, trekking poles, and a sturdy backpack.
  • Water and Water Purification System: Hydration is key at high altitudes.
  • First Aid Kit: Always be prepared for any minor injuries or ailments.
